Major Accident Investigations Team

There are eight members on MAIT. They come from different divisions with different expertise, but all are experts in collision investigation. MAIT is called where there is a fatality, an injury that has a high probability of being fatal, or a serious collision involving allied agencies in our jurisdiction. Additionally, MAIT is called upon by the Investigations Bureau when they have a particularly large crime scene, or one requiring trajectory analysis.



MAIT uses advanced measuring techniques including the Sokkia Total Station. This instrument uses lasers and is accurate to .0001 of an inch at 4000 feet of range. This is tremendously precise. This tool is coupled with software capable of diagramming in 3D. Together, these tools give MAIT an advantage in time savings and the ability to make highly accurate calculations to determine speed and direction which assist the District Attorney’s office prosecute highly complex cases. MAIT investigators must be proficient in physics and advanced algebra to determine speeds based on physical evidence at the scene.
