Owned by Jay & Melinda DeGraff, the Greenery Nursery and Garden Shop has been serving the Turlock community for 46 years. In the following statement, Spokesperson Adria Afferino details the company's many green initiatives and practices:
"Being that a significant part of our goods are green and growing, we strive to be as "green" as possible. The owners have always been respectful of resources and have taught the employees to be as well. A large part of sustainability in the nursery industry has to do with fertilizer, pesticide and soil use. Several years ago we shifted our main fertilizer selection to Kellogg Garden Company's Gardner & Bloome fertilizers and begun to use them in the nursery too. We have carried and heartily recommended Kellogg's Gardner & Bloome Potting soils and soil amendments for many years. You can find Kellogg's statement for Responsibility and Sustainability at www.kellogggarden.com. The Greenery has also been using largely organic pesticides for a few years and only applies them when absolutely needed.
The Greenery has worked hard to be a resource for gardeners in all seasons, wet and dry. We offer education, plant material, select supplies and services to help prepare, adapt and grow!
The Greenery is ready with all the tips to conserve water but still maintain a yard. Back in 2008 we wrote several FREE informational WaterWise guides, they still apply today and can be found on the California Friendly page on our website or picked up in the nursery.
Two years ago we sought out a new plant supplier, Mountain States Wholesale Nursery from Arizona, who grows "Desert Adapted" plants as well as a few natives that use a whole lot less water than we are used to. We have been stocking their plant material since in our California Friendly section and offering FREE seminars about their plants every spring and fall.
Plants are an important factor in our ecosystem. They support wildlife (birds, butterflies, hummingbirds and more) either directly or indirectly. Trees, shrubs and lawns cool our yards and homes as well as adding value to property. Letting established trees and shrubs die will result in higher costs to replace them. Lawns are cheaper to replace."
The Greenery also sought the availability of a Green Cart from Turlock Scavenger to dispose of the green waste generated at their business location. Prior to having the green cart, material was hauled off site to a private compost pile, in order to maintain responsible business practices with environmental stewardship.
